Car won’t start? Don’t panic, and don’t give up. We’ve put together a list of reasons your car won’t start. The following tips may not fix the root of the problem, but it could help you resolve the issue or get you to the closest repair shop.
“I turned the key, but the engine won’t crank.”
If your engine won’t crank, it’s most likely an electrical issue. Here are 3 reasons your engine won’t crank.
1. Your battery is dead.
Typically, the most common reason your car won’t start is because you have a dead battery.
Pro-Tip: Always carry jumper cables in your car!
How to Check if Your Battery is Dead:
Turn on your headlights or windshield wipers to test if it’s a dead battery. These features are battery operated and will only work if your battery’s not dead.
- If your lights or wipers turn on, your battery isn’t dead. It may be a different issue— like the ignition switch.
- If this is an ongoing problem, you may need to clean out any corrosion around the battery. If this still persists, it may be time for a new battery.
- To fix these, either jump start the vehicle or replace the battery. If you need a tow to the auto shop, call Marietta Wrecker at (770) 767-0569.
2. Not the battery? It could be a bad ignition switch.
If your wipers and headlights turn on but your car won’t start, you may have a failing ignition switch. Ignition switches are the most used switches on our vehicles, so it’s likely the wear and tear can have an effect.
If nothing happens or turns on when you turn the ignition switch to the start position, there may be a fault in the starting circuit or a bad ignition switch.
Signs of a Bad Ignition Switch:
- Your car stalls when the engine is on
- Your car starts then stalls
Signs of a bad ignition switch are also comparable to wiring issues, so a proper diagnosis is recommended.
3. You may have a bad starter.
Do you hear clicking noises when you turn the key? If you hear clicking when you turn the key, your starter may not be receiving enough electricity.
“My engine cranks, but my car won’t crank.”
If your engine cranks, but your car won’t start, it’s not an electrical issue. It could be:
- Empty gas tank
- Is it cold outside? If so, your fuel line may be frozen.
- Even if you do have gas and your car isn’t saying your fuel is low, it still could be. It’s possible you have a miscalibrated gauge which can cause you to run out of gas.
- Do you frequently drive your car on empty? If so, your fuel filter may be clogged. If your fuel filter is clogged, gas can’t reach the engine. Check your manual to see when your fuel filter should be changed.
